RESEARCH ANALYSIS


This illustration by John Tenniel in 1865 depicts what the character of Alice from the book Alice in Wonderland written by Lewis Caroll, might look like. i like this image because its very detailed and realistic, you can even read the writing on the bottle and its not full of color which would distract from the image itself. i like he way the image is made up of a series of stroked lines, it gives it a really nice effect. what i don't like about this image is the lack of scenery and objects the image is very much so based on the the table and alice, which i guess could be a good thing but it doesn't really give us a sense of the story or how whacky is is. i think i will use this image in my FMP as a reference because it is clear and easy to see the clothes that alice is wearing so this image will be useful for me to be able to look back and make sure that my outfit will be relatively true to the original.

PUNK

The punk subculture emerged in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia in the mid-1970s. Exactly which region originated punk has long been a major controversy within the movement. Various musical, Philosophical, Political, literary and artistic movements have influenced the subculture.

The punk subculture is centered on a loud, aggressive genre of rock music called Punk Rock.

The idea of punk fashion is to shock and outrage other people with the use of theatrical clothing, hairstyles, cosmetics, tattoos,  jewelry and body modification. 

Early punk fashion included ripped clothing, held together by safety pins or wrapped with tape, ordinary clothing customised by embellishing it with marker or adorning it with paint, and safety pins and razor blades were used as jewelry.  

Also popular was the use of leather, rubber, and vinyl clothing that the general public associates with transgressive sexual practices like bondage and S&M.

Some punks wear tight ''drainpipe'' jeans, plaid/tartan trousers, skirts or leather jackets, which are often decorated with painted band logos, pins and buttons, and metal studs or spikes. For footwear they tend to wear things such as converse sneakers, creepers, rocks  boots or Dr Martens boots. 

Some early punks occasionally wore clothes displaying a Nazi Swastika for shock value, but most contemporary punks are very anti-racist and are more likely to wear a crossed out Swastika symbol. Some punks are known to cut their hair into Mohawks or other dramatic shapes, style it to stand in spikes and colour it with vibrant, unnatural hues.

Alice in Wonderland research

ALICE

These two pictures of Alice were drawn by the original illustrator of the 1865 book written by Lewis Carroll, John Tenniel, the character of alice was based on a woman called Alice Liddell, though the pictures are depicted of a different person entirely, through this picture we can see that Tenniel has depicted Alice to be wearing a one length dress with puffy sleeves and an apron with pockets. she is also shown to be wearing little black shoes however because of the lack of colour, we cannot tell wether she is wearing tights or sleeves or socks and we can also not tell what colors her clothes are.

The two images below are illustrations by Charles Pears in 1907. He depicts Alice in two different ways, one as a young blonde girl in a white puffy long sleeved short dress and the other as a brown haired young girl in a blue long sleeved dress with a large collar with a white stripe. she is also drawn to be wearing brown tights with yellow shoes, so far in all the illustrations, alice is always wearing the exact same shoes and is always wearing a dress, however in Tenniel's illustrations she is seen to have long hair and wears a petticoat and in Pears illustrations, its short hair and just a plain dress which almost looks like a night gown.

These two images are screenshots taken from the 1951 animated film version of alice in wonderland. 

In these pictures we can clearly tell that she is a blonde girl with long hair, and is wearing a Blue knee length dress with puffy sleeves and a white apron like John Tenniels illustration, i think that the person who designed Alice, used his illustrations to design this animated alice, however this Alice does not have pockets in her apron and has a bow at the back, whereas in the 1865 version, it looked like the apron was attached to the dress so no need for the bow. we can also see that the shoes are once again exactly the same as all the illustration and that she is wearing white tights.

Lastly, these two images are from the 2010 film version of Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. The alice costume in this film was made by the costume designer Colleen Atwood and it is fairly different to the illustrations, its different in the way that there is no apron whatsoever, the dress is just above the floor, there are no white tights and different shoes, i couldn't find a clear picture of her shoes however i do know, from watching the film myself that they are white and black boots. there are a few similarities however, for example, the dress is still blue, a lighter blue though, and it still includes the same sleeves shown on the original illustrations and the later on ones as well.

WHAT I AM AIMING TO BE PRODUCING

For my final project i will be working towards creating a garment based on the story of Alice in wonderland. i want to create an outfit for the character of Alice but i want to add a punk twist.
I will be producing my work and research on a mix off A2 sheets and an A4 sketch book.

INFLUENCES AND GAINING MY RESEARCH

to start off with, i will be researching into the story of Alice in wonderland and looking at a variety of resources including the internet, books, drawings and paintings.
i will also be researching into the different styles of punk clothing as well, to get an idea of how i can mix the two ideas together. my research will be mostly visual so i can get to know the sales of punk and  of Alice's character.

DESIGNING AND DEVELOPMENT

to start designing, firstly i will create two mood boards on A3, one of Alice in Wonderland and one of Punk, this will hopefully give me an idea of how i can merge these two styles into one.
Next i will create an A3 page of rough designs and ideas, and then create my five final developed designs of which i will pick my favorite to make.

FABRIC SOURCING

With my fabrics, i will be sticking to the colors, red, blue, white and black as i know these are the main colors used for Alice's costume in the past.
I will be looking to use a mix of new and different materials that i have not used yet, though they will need to be plain as the complexity will hopefully be in my design.
